The Next Generation In Thermal Inkjet Coding Technology.

Ideally suited for printing on porous and non-porous materials, the L-Series printheads perform in a range of challenging packaging and industrial environments, such as the coding of outer cases, cartons, coated and uncoated media, bags, timber, plastics, films and construction products.

Date Coding Solution

Xact were approached by ‘Watergull Orchards’ a family business producing high quality English Apple juice.  The customer was looking for a date coding solution that could be applied directly to the bottles of apple juice.  They were using an out dated mechanical stamp which was giving poor print quality as shown in the image below.

The bottle date code needed to be clear, concise, fast and meet strict standards.  After a site visit, our technical team worked with the customer to recommend the Mperia L12 system with a 7” Mperia controller.  The Xact solution provided a cost effective and flexible option and Watergull Orchards were impressed with the high print quality and service provided from Xact.

The L-Series is a system that truly grows with your business.  It’s a cost effective and flexible system which will improve productivity.

This video explains the L-Series in more detail.

Robust Large Character Coding

The V-Series is versatile and ideal for applying a variety of product information and traceability codes, as well as logos, graphics and barcodes onto both porous and non-porous materials.

Together with its durable design, this makes the V-Series ideal to meet the demands of extreme environments. Typical applications include the coding and marking of Construction products, Chemicals & Fertilisers, Industrial Packaging, Automotive Products, Foams, Plastics & Films, Paper & Pulp.  The capability to operate in these sectors means that basic applications such as case coding are also suited to the V-Series.

Coding Solution In Harsh Environment

Leading insulation provider, Xtratherm approached Xact with their coding & marking challenge.  Xtratherm, who supply the construction industry with a range of insulation products, needed a solution for their foil backed insulation panels.  They needed to apply ‘precise’ location marks on their insulation panels necessary for the installation process.

Working with the Xtratherm team and building on our experience and success within the insulation industry,  Xact were able to offer a solution that delivered unrivalled flexibility using the power of the Mperia system to operate all 9 heads from a single controller.  The Mperia ViaJet V-Series system incorporating 9 print heads from the one Mperia 12” controller suited Xtratherm’s needs and effectively solved the problem, along with the flexibility to include additional heads at a later date for the application of product information and logos on this and other production lines.

This flexibility reduced the amount of hardware at the line, in turn lowering investment costs on the initial purchase as well as expanding the system to meet other product marking applications at the plant.  Their investment was secure.   The ink consumption and general operating costs were also massively reduced in comparison to other systems.  Due to the success of the system Xtratherm has already rolled the system out to other plants in Europe.

The outcome is reliable and consistent printing, despite the high operating temperatures and dusty environment.

Leading Snack Manufacturer Saves Time and Money with New Coding & Marking Technology From Xact

The solution proposed was our universal print platform, MPERIA™, combined with its high-resolution piezoelectric print heads, the Viajet T-Series. To meet the company’s needs, they required one MPERIA™ controller to manage all six production lines, and a 4” print head with a custom conveyor mount for each production line.

The results were impressive.  With Matthews’ MPERIA™, the snack manufacturer manages all production lines from a centralised controller, and can troubleshoot remotely with its Virtual Network Computing feature. This has greatly reduced downtime due to re-work and discard issues (saving them approximately £650 per month) and they no longer having to wait for technical support. In addition, the T-Series print heads allow for a 4” print area* and has a recirculating ink system that reduced ink waste and maintenance time. They estimate a £850 cost saving per month.

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics

This show is aimed at industrial engineering and manufacturing professionals looking to find design, engineering, procurement and production solutions. Over 800 leading industry suppliers will be at the 2015 show, demonstrating new lines and revolutionary technology.

Xact has chosen this event to demonstrate ‘Mperia’ the latest Industrial Inkjet Integrated Solution from World Leaders, Matthews Marking.  ‘Mperia’ is the latest in production line coding management, capable of managing multiple printing technologies, combined with high speed, high resolution printing.  All our demonstrations will take place on stand S26.

Xact will also be showcase the three latest Matthews Marking technologies, the Viajet V-Series, T-Series and L-Series.   Marking on all materials, in all environments, we can quite literally code or mark any product.

The first of these technologies – the V-Series – features Matthews’ drop on demand (DOD) technology that marks substrates including metal, paper and pulp, wood, concrete and plastic.  Matthews’ DOD printheads are the fastest in the industry, marking over 800 fpm (244 meters/min), with the longest life – over 6 billion firings per head.

The high resolution Ink Jet – the T-Series – provides brand on demand printing of batch and date codes, variable text, graphics, and barcodes.  Our superior ink efficiency and re-circulating auto-prime function provides up to 35% less ink consumption than competing brands.  The T-Series also allows you to stitch print heads together for large logos and branding, allowing you to replace pre-printed cartons and labelling equipment and labels.

Like the T-Series, the L-Series offers high resolution printing up to 2″ (51mm) per print head and a wide selection of fast dry inks for marking porous or non-porous materials at high speeds. Its removable cartridge makes replacing ink easy, all while reducing changeover and improving uptime.

Meet our friendly sales representative, Craig Gatland, on S26 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm Tuesday-Wednesday and Thursday.

Packaging Corner: Maintain consistency with case marking

Marking products and cases with identification coding and other information during their manufacture or during packaging, while they’re in transit on a production line, can be a tremendous challenge. That’s due to the variety of printing technologies and systems in the marketplace.

“Historically, communicating directly to different types of printing technologies used on the same line, throughout a facility, or even at different geographic locations, has been extremely complicated—if not impossible,” says Antonio Cortes, product manager at Matthews Marking Systems. “That’s because there has never been a universal print management system available that could interface with, and direct the operation of, multiple print heads.”

To address that challenge, Matthews Marking developed the MPERIA universal controller platform. The system communicates seamlessly—through wireless or Ethernet connections—with high-resolution piezoelectric inkjet, thermal inkjet and valve jet print heads from any manufacturer across multiple production lines in multiple locations, MPERIA also connects with enterprise resource planning (ERP) and warehouse management systems (WMS) to populate production information into templates maintained in a centralized database.

This capability allows operations that produce the same product in multiple locations to maintain consistency in code appearance and placement. That’s important for companies concerned with consistent product branding and messaging. That level of accuracy is also critical for meeting stringent track-and-trace regulations, such as those required of pharmaceutical and medical products, says Cortes.

“In addition, MPERIA easily manages hundreds of formats needed to comply with local country messaging requirements,” he adds. “And, it helps co-packers who must accommodate the coding placement requests of their customers, or risk chargebacks for non-compliance.”

Without a centralised controller, information output by each print head has to be manually entered or modified at its line-side controller. “If a production line has multiple print heads, that means an operator has to visit each control panel and key in the changes,” he says. “Not only does that process take a lot of time, there’s the potential for mistakes, resulting in wasted productivity and scrap.”

Barry Baldock, Xact Director explains “the controller can also be integrated with scanners and other materials handling production line control systems”.
In short, “Mperia seamlessly integrates product marking with plant operations and customer databases,” says Barry Baldock, Xact’s Director. “The result is that customers can automate coding, reduce marking errors, and provide valuable traceability information for their products.”

Pharmaceutical serialisation: a must?

Manufacturers need the ability to quickly and positively identify and isolate all suspect products in the supply chain. Without legible barcodes and human readable production dates and lot numbers, product recalls are difficult to manage.

By 2017, the entire pharmaceutical industry in Europe must comply with the “falsified medicines” directive 2011/62/EU.  In short all companies operating in the pharmaceutical industry of all European states need to introduce a serialisation system with a control at the point of dispensation.

Xact can help maintain compliance and traceability with its variety of marking and coding applications powered by Mperia.

“MPERIA™ seamlessly integrates product marking with plant operations and customer databases,” says Barry Baldock, Xact’s Director. “The result is that customers can automate coding, reduce marking errors, and provide valuable traceability information for their products.”
