Xact – Cementing Relationships With The Construction Industry

A company producing bagged aggregate products needed an inline printing system for applying the product ID comprising of a product name and traceability codes to their plastic packaging.

The customer stipulated it was essential the proposed system could provide a large high quality print format (to aid visibility of the codes when bags are palletised) as well as meeting the tough operating environments of the plant (dust, vibration and variable operating temperatures).

Our competitors were offering CIJ (continuous ink jet) printing technology. This was also an option available within the range from Xact.

Instead, Xact proposed the latest V-series printing system which, in comparison to CIJ technology, not only increased the legibility of the codes but also significantly reduced initial investment and operating costs moving forward.

The V-series is also the most industrial printing technology on the market so the tough operating conditions of the plant were no issue to long-term performance and reliability

Xact’s years of expertise within the industrial sector and in-particular our knowledge of coding & marking construction products, provided added confidence to move forward with Xact.

New MPERIA™ Measures Up To The Timber Industry

A leading manufacturer of roof trusses and other timber products approached Xact looking for a printing system to apply the product ID for traceability and to meet the new CE requirements of the industry. The customer wished to replace their current printing unit as it was proving unreliable and costly to maintain.  In addition to this, the customer had been quoted thousands for the line builder to re-write the program on the line to provide compatibility with a new printing system.

The product ID (comprising of a length measurement) is applied during the automated cutting and measuring process on the line. The information is generated not only for the end-user and general plant traceability, but also for new CE requirements of the industry. The product length is downloaded to the printer from the operating system controlling the cutting & measuring process on the line. The marking process was previously being completed by another printing system networked to the line.  Xact’s solution was the installation of  MPERIA™ and VIAjet V-Series print head with emulation plug-in.

WHY CHOOSE XACT?

  • Xact were able to eliminate this cost by proposing our new MPERIA controller loaded with a plug-in which emulates the current download and converts the string which is compatible with MPERIA™ operating system.
  • This flexibility not only eliminated the high cost to modify the software on the line but also downtime on implementation, and also meant no additional hardware was required.
  • In addition to the above, the implementation of the latest V-Series 8000+ print head has significantly improved print quality and reduced operating costs. The head is the most robust on the market so despite the harsh operating environment long-term reliability and consistency of the marking process is another significant advantage to the customer.
  • The customer is also aware of our VIAjet L and T series high-resolution print heads within the range, also operated through the MPERIA™ operating system. So, with the success of the V-Series the customer is reviewing other plant applications for these systems also.
  • MPERIA V, L and T series printers are proven across all sectors of the Timber Industry for applications including general product ID’s, to logos, graphics and barcodes.

MPERIA™ – The Complete Coding Solution For All Packaging!

Xact recently installed an MPERIA™ system for a company producing firelighting products (solids and fluids).  The client wanted a combined system for the coding of primary and secondary packaging.  Our solution offered exceptional print quality in a challenging industrial environment for the printing of production dates, batch codes and outercase coding comprising of company logos, barcodes, product description and specification.

The MPERIA VIAJet T and L Series printers are the latest industrial ink-jet technology available.  The T-Series is the high resolution inkjet (piezo) and the L-Series is the high resolution thermal inkjet (TIJ).  The entire systems provide exceptional versatility and print quality for applications to porous and non-porous materials in challenging packaging and industrial environments, such as this example.

The system is controlled by MPERIA™, which is a production line coding management system able to manage multiple print technologies across multiple production lines.  In this case MPERIA™ was set up to control the L and T series print heads. The L-series completes the cap coding process on the bottles, comprising of a production date and batch code. The T-series heads are used for the outer case coding process on three production lines with the application comprising of product description, specification, date and times codes, company logos and barcodes.

WHY CHOOSE XACT?

The Key to the clients decision making process and subsequently choosing Xact was the unrivalled flexibility the MPERIA™ system provided the business.

This included:

  • The ability to control all marking processes across multiple production lines from one user interface, irrespective of the marking technology required
  • Seamless control and management of the marking process over an Ethernet network to PC’s located in the main office, including a VNC set-up, which provides the customer with complete visibility and control of all marking processes across the plant without having to visit the production area. This has eliminated coding errors and improved operating efficiency
  • In addition to the above, local control is also provided at the line for added security and flexibility
  • The scalable design and ease in which MPERIA™ can be expanded as their business grows was another significant advantage to the customer. A future-proof system that ensures their investment is secure.

In addition to the above, the intuitive MPERIA™ software along with the exceptional control and quality of the print formats were also key to the decision making process.

On-the-mark again for the Automotive Industry

A leading manufacturer of automotive products needed an automated spot marking solution as part of the internal quality testing procedure.  Products included clutches, power steering, suspension and air conditioning hoses.  The customer wished to replace their manual identification process as part of the quality pass testing for the hoses as this was time consuming and open to operator error.  In addition to this, the customer also wanted to reduce the costs associated with the manual marking process.  Other printing systems and technologies were not compatible with the available space inside the testing assembly and were also susceptible to the speed and movement of the automated marking process.

Although the mark requirement itself was very basic (i.e. a simple spot to identify a product pass) the challenge for this application centred around:

  • The limited space within the testing machine
  • The requirement for a robust design to cope with the high speed movement and start/stopping of the head
  • Operating distances for the print head
  • Drying time of the ink
  • The facility to operate multiple print heads from one system

Xact were able to offer a low cost solution to meet all of the customer requirements.  Multiple 1v print heads offering standard controller and PLC control, with our 1ltr ink supply unit incorporating a low level ink sensor and alarm. The heads operate our DPI411 fast-dry ink.  The flexibility to expand our system and switch fluids to suit different products and test requirements was also a significant advantage to the customer.

Following the success of the first three head system additional systems have been installed.
